I went to the OpenAI HQ for a story examining OpenAI's tweaking of ChatGPT's friendly personality as it caused unexpected psychological effects in some users. Inside OpenAI, I was asked to not make any photos with humans in them aside from the 2 people I was there to photograph. The result is a bizarre set of images where people are visible from the outside but the interiors are empty. Here is a link to the article by Kashmir Hill and Jennifer Valentino-DeVries which has a mix of photography by me and Mark Abramson. The indavidual pictured is Steven Adler, who worked on safety and policy research and now writes a newsletter about A.I., He grew concerned about an early use of the company’s technology for A.I. companions. Thwo gentleman are Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, on the left, with Johannes Heidecke, OpenAI's head of safety systems. Shortly after Mr. Turley started at the company in 2022, he worked on the release of ChatGPT.
